So those who know me are aware that I don’t get home much. I’m fairly busy and often at my girlfriend’s place, so when I do get home it’s only for a short period of time.
Anyways back a few months ago I was lucky enough to get a couple of fines; 1 for parking in a visitor carpark at work, and the other for a speed camera, 10km/h over the limit on the way to Sydney. No worries.
Now, when it comes to paying bills, I’m a little slack. It’s not that I can’t afford them, I just really couldn’t be bothered. So yes, I’ll admit I paid the parking fine a little late (mainly due to forgetting about it), and I paid the speeding fine a little late also, due to not checking my mail pile when I was at home.
So it’s been a while since I’ve been home long enough to check mail etc. I popped in on Saturday and decided to start opening some letters. To my surprise, there was not not 1 or 2, but 4 letters from the State Debt Recovery Office (SRDO) and a few from the NSW RTA.
Here’s what has happened:
I paid both my fines after the due date, so for each of these they slugged me $50. I was sent 2 letters regarding these NEW fines, which I obviously didn’t pay. So for each $50 fine, I was slugged with another $40 fine. Lucky me! Then, the best part is, after not paying the outstanding $90 for the first fine, they decided to suspend my drivers license. And, after not paying the other outstanding $90 for the second fine, they decided to suspend my car registration!
So, for the 2 fines that I had already paid and forgotten about, I now owe $180, and have been driving around unlicensed and unregistered for the past few days.
Awesome.
